Mubadala Health’s Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) is offering an online educational course for patients with type 1 diabetes to enhance their understanding of the condition and encourage better self-management and outcomes.

The ICLDC Structured Education Programme (SEP) consists of 18 modules designed by ICLDC doctors, dietitians and diabetes educators. SEP will be delivered every quarter and the next session is scheduled for 30 August to 1 September, from 12-4pm. The modules will provide patients who have type 1 diabetes with a structured set of educational materials and resources to enable better management of this chronic condition and reduce the onset and severity of associated complications such as eye and kidney disease.

Dr Alya Al Mazrouei, Acting Executive Director of ICLDC, says: “We are very excited to offer the ICLDC Structured Education Programme again, which has been updated this time to cover circumstances related to COVID-19. The programme will lay a solid foundation for better diabetes care and ultimately improve our patients’ quality of life. The programme will equip patients with the right tools and information to manage their condition confidently and responsibly and avoid any debilitating complications.”

She added that the programme serves an important role in patients’ treatment plans. “The key to success when it comes to managing type 1 diabetes is patient education. Type 1 diabetes is a complex condition that requires constant planning and decision-making. Patient education empowers the individual who has to live with this condition 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” she explains.

The three-day course will cover several modules including Glucose Monitoring; Carbohydrate Counting, Managing Sick Days; Hypoglycaemia and Hyperglycaemia Management; Diabetes and Driving; Diabetes and Pregnancy; and Emotional and Behavioural aspects of living with type 1 diabetes. Each module is available in both Arabic and English. To find out more about the programme and how to register, please contact sep@icldc.ae.
